Other Bristol Foodie Faves...

Cottage
It's known as a bar but the locals love to eat there too.  The burgers are said to be the best in Johnson City. ESPN's Bo Wilkes, a local, was impressed it was even on the list!

Johnson City, TN

Shirley's Home Cooking
On the way to Bristol and back... this is your place! I stop at Shirley's every year on the way home from the Bristol race. It's a simple place right in the mountains off rt 321 by Watuga Lake.  This means it is also not within reason to go there during the race weekend.  The name of their restaurant says it all... Home Cooking. Simply put , that's what it is and Iove it!

Gluten Free Choices
A few people thoughout the NASCAR garage have gluten-free diets. We are going to try to include some gluten free options each week on Speedeats.

Kingsport Sunday Short Trackin'
Close by Bristol... Kingsport Speedway, run by NASCAR's Pressley family, is running a nice Sunday card including the Pro Cup Series.  If you are in the area after the races, this will be good Sunday daytime race. Kingsport is one of the best tracks in the southeast. Check out their site for info click here

Scratch Brick Oven
Part wood fired pizza, part bakery, all delicious. You like organic? This is your place. "Not for Everyone" is one of their themes and we like that. It's not a chain and the place and food has personality.  Scratch's items come from a hand-built brick and riverstone oven.  They also have Gluten Free Pizza options.

GLUTEN FREE CHOICE OF WEEK

Alta Cucina
This place is a great choice if you are in the Johnson City area. Alta is a wine-lover spot and serves up some real tasty italian food. You wont be disappointed.  Chef Moe is a character. He uses only the best ingredients and puts an individual touch on his dishes.

Ridgewood Barbecue
click here to view our 2010 video

Ridgewood is MD's favorite Barbecue place in the country. Benny Parson's introduced him to this special place years ago.  Ridgewood is only 10-minutes away from the track. The wait tends to be long depending on when you arrive, but it's well worth it. I take new people to this gem every year.  Order the Pork Barbecue platter with the fries. Oh, also make sure to get some of Mrs. Proffit's Baked Beans. Yum!  Also... The Bluecheese has become a local legend.

Cootie Brown's
This place is downright funky and I love it.  Huge fan of the Jamaican Jerk Chicken. Great sandwiches as well. MD took a group from Motor Racing Outreach there last year, as well as Riki Rachtman... all had fun and liked the place.

Cootie's has a creative menu but mostly is a fun experience. Try their pizzas....you can build them how you like them. If you see Key Lime cookies up by the counter... leave them along because they are all mine!

GLUTEN FREE CHOICES

Cafe Pacific
Debbie Robinson tipped us off to this restaurant. Nearby Bristol, it's a good place for some very creative cuisine. From Black Pepper Steak to Goat Cheese Crusted Rack of Lamb, the menu is full of tasty choices. We say try the Thai Basil Chicken.

Dixie Outpost
A unique barbecue place that comes highly recommended by our pal and fellow foodie Andrew Coppley.  Andrew tells us it is a great place for bbq, wings and hot dogs and that the sauce is boss.
